Unmatched HD Video Quality and Editing Performance

Wafian HR-1 Direct-to-Disk Recorder

Record up to 36 hours of 10-bit CineForm Intermediate files at 1080p24 through HD-SDI

For his new feature film The Violent Kind (IMDB) Geoff Pepos from Rhythm Films and Rogue Arts has chosen Wafian's HR-1 and CineForm's Prospect HD for his production and post workflow.  After finishing the majority of his production shoot with the HR-1, Geoff sent this unsolicited email to CineForm and Wafian:

"Finally had the time to load some of our footage gathered from your magic box [Wafian HR-1] into After Effects t'night...and applied some of my After Effects magic to it and I must say...WOW!   The footage is so clean that I'm going to have to add grain to forgive the actors' facial imperfections."

"Let the ignorant assume that a compressed (CineForm) format is somehow inferior...while they wait for all of that uncompressed data to funnel in and out of their systems, we'll be making more movies here."

Amen....

Wafian HR-1 Brochure

CineForm and Wafian Corporation recently announced a marketing and technology partnership centered around the new Wafian HR-1 direct-to-disk recorder.  Targeting on-set and on-location production acquisition, the HR-1 can record up to 18 hours of 10-bit CineForm Intermediate files through the HR-1's HD-SDI interface.  Read the press release....

The HR-1 is ideal for recording maximum quality on live shoots by bypassing camera tape compression which invariably lowers spatial and chroma resolution plus lowers arithmetic precision.  The HR-1 records directly into full-raster (1920x1080 or 1280x720) CineForm Intermediate files with 10 bits of precision and 4:2:2 chroma resolution.

After recording, post-production workflow efficiency is extraordinary.  The HR-1 completely eliminates the time-consuming and expensive "ingest" process required with tape-based capture. Files may be easily moved from the HR-1 over the network to archive servers, editing/compositing workstations, or to Firewire drives for portability.  Because CineForm Intermediate files are optimized for post-production performance, material is immediately available for real-time editing using CineForm's Prospect HD with Adobe Premiere Pro plus effects/compositing work with Adobe After Effects.

If you just can't give up your trusted Final Cut Pro or Avid system (and don't care about real-time editing performance anyway) you'll be pleased to know that CineForm Intermediate files can be converted using various PC industry tools into SD or uncompressed HD files compatible with both FCP and Avid.  In this manner the CineForm Intermediate files can be your online digital master for either an uncompressed HD workflow or an offline proxy workflow.

Special Support for JVC's GY-HD100U and Canon's XL H1
JVC's GY-HD100u offers a component HD output that provides a true 50p/60p mode that bypasses MPEG compression.  This feature offers a tremendous quality benefit to Indie filmmakers that is not available when capturing the HDV signal on tape.  The Wafian HR-1 can record the 720p60 signal, offering independent filmmakers very professional slow motion.  Without rendering, CineForm's Prospect HD can interpret this footage as 24p, providing 2.5X slow motion effects.

In addition to 60p, this same output provides 50p, 48p, 30p, 25p, and 24p - a truly progressive camcorder offering variable frame rate capture in a small, very high-quality package.  In non-60p camera modes, the HD100U adds pulldown on the component HD output port to create a resultant 60p signal, which the HR-1 can reverse upon capture, leaving a perfect progressive (without pulldown) source in CineForm Intermediate that has bypassed MPEG compression.

NOTE: In its initial release, the HR-1 supports reverse pulldown on 24p material from the HD100U component output.  Other pulldown removal modes will be added later.

Canon's XL H1 provides HD-SDI output in both 60i and 24F modes which the HR-1 can record.  In 24F mode, the XL H1 adds pulldown into the stream when sending the signal over the HD-SDI port, which the HR-1 removes.  The resulting captured files are 10-bit 24p CineForm Intermediate.
