CineForm RAW technology primer

As described in the Tech Note Primer for CineForm RAW, Active Metadata is embedded inside each CineForm RAW file.  This metadata, which includes descriptors for White Balance, Camera Color Matrix, and 3D Looks (more will be added in the future), is considered "active" because it defines operations the CineForm decoder will apply during decoding of Cineform RAW files.

Using the SetActiveMetadata utility, controls to turn ON or OFF individual (or all) active metadata fields during playback are provided outside of a specific calling application.  These controls work for any calling application such as Windows Media Player, Sony Vegas, Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Combustion, etc.  In this manner the chosen metadata playback preferences are global, meaning the CineForm decoder will always apply (or not) specific metadata fields during decode, regardless of the calling application.

If using Premiere Pro for editing, those global controls are provided within the Playback Setting control panel inside Premiere Pro.  Premiere Pro will ignore the global ON or OFF controls provided in SetActiveMetadata.  But Premiere Pro will obey the Color Database controls provided in SetActiveMetadata.

Windows - Controlling Active Metadata During Playback and Rendering

At right is the SetActiveMetadata control panel located in the CineForm --> Tools directory under Windows Start Menu.

Global Overrides: The upper panel labeled "Global Overrides" (color added for emphasis), globally controls whether Active Metadata is applied after the CineForm RAW file is decoded, and before it is presented to the calling application. Each Active Metadata parameter can be enabled or disabled individually. The Active Metadata control is independent of the calling application.

Debayer for 8-bit Playback: Offers choice of DeBayer algorithm when the CineForm decoder is requested to playback at full resolution 8-bit RGB.  This includes most applications such as Sony Vegas, Virtual Dub, and others. Automatic = Bilinear Demosaic.

Note: Playback in Windows Media Player will always use the Bilinear Demosaic algorithm independent of the Debayer algorithm choice.

Debayer for 16-bit Playback: Offers choice of DeBayer algorithm when the CineForm decoder is requested to render CineForm RAW files as 16-bit RGB or greater.  This includes Adobe After Effects and Autodesk Combustion. Automatic = CineForm Advanced Detail 1.

Color Database: The lower panel labeled "Color Database" (color added for emphasis) manages the color database on a "Project" basis.  This means you can use multiple instances of the same clip in different "projects", each with a different set of applied color data.

Note1: Currently the only way to to change active metadata assigned to a file (for instance - to attach a different 3D LUT) is to use the CineForm RAW File Metadata controls within Premiere Pro. In a later release the changing of Active Metadata will be added to the SetActiveMetadata utility.

Note2: In many projects you will not need to use the selector controls underneath Color Database.  If you are editing a project in Premiere Pro for instance, the CineForm RAW File Metadata controls should suffice.

Additional Color Database features:

Save: Saves any color changes performed on one of more clips into the current project's color database

Export: Will export the current Project database into a new .CDB file so the color database can be moved to a different PC.  Currently you can move the .CDB file only between Windows PCs.  In the future you will be able to move it to Mac.  When moving the .CDB file you must also move associated .Look files and register them on the new system.  (In the future the "Export" feature will also gather all .Look files for easier movement between machines).

Delete: Deletes the current Project, but leaves the current color for all clips as is. Use Reset to clear color data from all your clips

Reset: Removes any color customization, restores the while balances and LOOK back to the camera's default

Branch: Creates a new Project which inherits the settings from the previously active Project.

Merge Projects (check box): When selecting a previously stored Project, all Color settings from the Current Project will be appended (additive) to the newly selected Project.
