The following pages present an overview of a
CineForm-based post workflow, from camera (or file) acquisition through project
distribution. Using the links below you can access specific workflow
topics. Other sections on our website will fill in additional details such
as our Product pages, Tech
Notes pages, and our FAQ.

Before We Get
Started - A Few Things to Know About a CineForm Workflow |
-
A
Codec? CineForm is often thought of as "a codec". More accurately,
CineForm software offers a compression subsystem, built on top of the
industry's most comprehensive codec, designed for use in online
post-production. Some applications will access our codec directly, but
often the codec is accessed through an applications interface that adds
other layers of functionality, including pre-processing algorithms,
real-time video engines, Active Metadata™ processing, and others.
-
Visual Quality: From a visual quality
standpoint think of CineForm files as an alternative to using uncompressed
files, only much smaller. Said differently, feel confident about
CineForm visual fidelity - in fact CineForm 444 visual quality exceeds that
of the respected HDCam SR format which is universally accepted throughout
professional post-production.

Up to 10X Faster than J2K
In addition to high visual fidelity, CineForm files are optimized for very
fast performance on Intel-architecture CPUs. As a comparison to
another Wavelet based codec - JPEG2000 - CineForm's codec is 6X to 10X
faster than J2K. Why? We designed our compression algorithm to have
very high visual fidelity and fast performance. JPEG2000 offers
high quality, but was designed as the next-generation still-frame
compression format - it was never intended for use in real-time video/film
post-production.
-
Cross-Platform Compatible: CineForm files
are cross-platform (Windows/Mac) compatible. Any application that
recognizes AVI or MOV files can recognize CineForm files as long as our
codec (or decoder) is installed. In fact, our HD Link software can re-wrap
between CineForm AVI and MOV files without disturbing the underlying
compression.
-
Windows Versus Mac? Today our most
complete features are offered on Windows. We are continuously
improving our support for Mac, but we haven't finished porting our software.
On the Mac today our codec is fully functional with the same compression
features as on Windows. But our real-time editing engines,
pre-processing software, direct-to-disk recording, and file conversion
utilities are not yet working on Mac.
For this reason, if you're primarily a Mac user of CineForm files, you will
purchase CineForm's Neo family which comes with two licenses - one for
Windows and one for Mac. You will perform capture/conversion
operations using the Windows license (including Bootcamp) and the resulting
files are fully compatible on Mac with Final Cut Pro, Motion, etc.
